How does STD testing work?

Next, he might collect your urine, a cheek swab, blood, or a tissue sample from your genitals. Using the fast and efficient in-house lab, he tests these samples against common STDs. You may get results of your test the same day, or within a few days.

What happens if I test positive for an STD?
It’s scary to test positive for any sexually transmitted disease. With the right care, however, it’s easy to heal from most STDs and prevent transmission to another person.
If you do test positive, Dr. Schwartz can recommend a course of action, which may include:
- Antibiotics or other oral medication
- Topical creams or ointments to reduce irritation or itching
- Safe sex counseling
It’s important to complete your treatment as prescribed and to follow instructions for taking any medication. If you don’t, it’s possible you won’t fully eliminate the STD, even if you stop experiencing symptoms.
When is it safe to have sex again?
There is generally a period of time where you should refrain from sexual intercourse if STD testing shows a positive result. This varies with each person. It’s best to schedule a follow-up appointment with Dr. Schwartz or your primary care physician to make sure your symptoms are gone, and that you are not contagious anymore. If you’re unsure, wait until you’ve spoken with a medical expert before resuming sexual activity.
